Keeping in theme with presentations going on this week, I'd like to discuss a rare mental condition. Alien hand syndrome is when a person's hand is not under the control of their mind. They believe it to be an entity separate from themselves, and it appears to move against the owner's wishes. MRI scans of patients experiencing this phenomenon reveal that lesions in the parietal cortex may be the cause. It has manifested in patients through hair pulling, uncontrolled grabbing, attempts at suffocation, and other self-oppositional actions. Cases may be grouped into four different categories: intermanual conflict (one hand directly opposing the other), alien hand sign (a feeling that one's hand isn't their own), anarchic hand syndrome (the hand takes goal-oriented action against the owner's will), and supernumerary hand (feeling of having an extra limb). As of now, there is no cure or specific treatment for the condition, and only further research will provide answers to the many questions we still have.
